About Carbapenem Resistance

Carbapenemase-producing gram-negative bacteria can decompose carbapenem drugs, leading to clinical antibiotic resistance, which not only prolongs the patient’s hospital stay, poor prognosis, increased morbidity and mortality, but also It can cause serious public health problems such as outbreaks of nosocomial infections. The global spread of such carbapenem-insensitive microorganisms is an important medical and public health problem. Carbapenem drugs have a diverse range of hydrolase enzymes, and their genes can be further spread through delivery plasmids and integrons, and they have a selective advantage in hospitals where antibacterial drugs are used frequently. Therefore, the rapid identification of organisms carrying these drug-resistant genes and specific genes can prevent the abuse of antibiotic drugs. Nucleic acid amplification-based assays or Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is an alternative method that allows for sensitive and specific detection of carbapenemase gene from clinical samples / cultured isolates.
