About Pneumocystis
Pneumocystis jirovecii is an opportunistic fungal pathogen causing Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), with high morbidity and mortality in HIV-infected as well as non-HIV-immunocompromised patient populations. Coincident with increasing adoption of transplantation and broad application of immunosuppressant agents, PCP is increasingly diagnosed oncology patients, solid organ and stem cell transplants, as well as those receiving corticosteroids and other immune-modulating agents.
